Post and Telegraph national roll of honour board

The Post and Telegraph Department developed a national roll of honour board which listed the names and ranks of all those wounded or killed during the First World War. It was hung at the entry to the General Post Office building in Featherston St. When the department moved to a new General Post Office building in Herd St the board moved with them.

In 1952 it was replaced by the pictured list which commemorated both First and Second World War dead. It contains a quote from Alfred Tennyson that originally appeared on the First World War board:

Not once or twice in our rough Island story

The path of duty was the way to glory

Completed by a former staff member of the department, Mrs Malone, it was unveiled inside the building by Governor-General Sir Bernard Freyberg in late July 1952. It is now held unframed at Archives New Zealand.

Members of the Post and Telegraph Department initiated roll of honour boards in a number of other parts of the country during the First World War. It is not known what became of any of these boards.
