Alice Gill was an active member of the Northland community and was well-known for her fundraising efforts during the First World War. An artistic woman, Alice made the most of her talents, creating items to be sold and displayed at fund raising events, including at a concert in 1915 and an auction in 1914. The money was donated to the Belgian Relief Fund and for her contribution to the cause Alice was later awarded the Médaille de la Reine Elisabeth (Queen Elisabeth Medal).
