Arm badges showing enlistment status

From early 1916, men who had enlisted for, or been discharged or exempted from, military service were required to wear armbands in public to distinguish them from ‘shirkers’ who had yet to enlist. As the war progressed, police were given stronger powers to stop any man of military age and demand to see his credentials.
