First World War shirker cartoon

Image

Recruit numbers were falling short by late 1915, when this Charles Blomfield cartoon was published in the New Zealand Observer. Many people worried that ‘shirkers’, men deliberately avoiding military service in the country’s hour of need, would lounge at home while better men died for them at the front. To such people conscription seemed a compelling solution to the ‘shirker’ problem.
