Quakers and military service cartoon

The Military Service Act made provision for men from pacifist religious groups – such as the Society of Friends (Quakers) – to be exempted from military service. Some, like cartoonist Charles Blomfield, worried that ‘shirkers’ could use this provision to avoid military service, but the stringent standards employed by the authorities meant that only a tiny minority of religious objectors were actually eligible for exemption.
