In June 1918 the staff of the Government Printing Office dressed as animals and formed themselves into a ‘zoo’ that joined other groups and tableaux processing through Wellington to join a military tattoo in Newtown to raise money for the Red Jersey Appeal. A Lower Hutt group dressed as fruit and paraded as a ‘perambulating horn of plenty’, while the musical zoo climbed into the wooden cage pulled by a horse bedecked with bells and sashes, and growled and cavorted while the spectators threw coins at them.
The Red Jersey Appeal raised money for Salvation Army officers (whose uniform included a red jersey), who provided support and services to soldiers and civilians during the First World War.
