A soldier returns, by Ion Brown

Image

New Zealand Army Artist Ion Brown painted 50 years later: a soldier returns to mark the 50th anniversary commemorations of the Battle for Crete.

Brown based this painting on scenes he witnessed and photographed when he travelled to Crete for the commemorations. This painting captures the moment New Zealand soldier Fred Irving (centre) was reunited with Cretan civilians from the village of Vilandredos who had sheltered him from the Germans. The other men in the painting are (left to right): Foustalieris Manolis, Foustalieris Sifis, Gavalas Georgios, and Dasalakis Vagelis.
