Taihoa marae memorial gates, Wairoa

Taihoa marae, near Wairoa, has a fine set of war memorial gates. The two main pillars have plaques inscribed in English and Māori respectively: 

FOR KING AND / COUNTRY / IN MEMORY OF / THE MAORI SOLDIERS / OF THIS DISTRICT / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR THE CAUSE OF / FREEDOM / AND HUMANITY /1914-1918 / 1939-1945.

MOTE KINGI METE / EMEPAEA / HE TOHU / WHAKAMAHARATANGA / MO NGA HOIA MAORI / O TE WAIROA / I MATE / KI TE PAE / O TE PAKANGA / 1914-1918 / 1939 - 1945.

The other pillars bear the names of various theatres of war: Gallipoli, Flanders, France, Italy, Greece, Crete and North Africa.
