Built in 1923, the Waipango war memorial gates originally stood at entrance to the local school. The gates disappeared following the school’s closure in the 1950s and the memorial deteriorated over the years. In 2019, local community groups refurbished and relocated the memorial to the Riverton Cemetery (see last four images above). This included the original gates, which a local farmer had stored away for safekeeping. The original stone tablets were set in concrete and re-erected at the memorial's former site (see main image).
