Women in Parliament cartoon, 1933

Image

Anything new in the House came in for comment in the newspapers. In 1933 when Elizabeth McCombs took her seat as the first woman in Parliament, there was much fussing about what she would wear. And of course, there were those who used the opportunity to suggest that the entire nature of Parliament would change. Here J.C. Hill of the Auckland Star has the male Members in drag.
