Hōne Heke fells the flagstaff at Kororāreka

Image

Hōne Heke fells the flagstaff flying the British flag at Kororāreka.

Arthur McCormick’s painting of Hōne Heke chopping down the British flag on Maiki Hill above Kororāreka in 1845 was an illustration for Reginald Horsley’s New Zealand: romance of empire, published in 1908. This is one of the more enduring images associated with the New Zealand Wars.
