Te Awa signed the Treaty of Waitangi on 4 March 1840 at Karaka Bay, Tāmaki (Auckland). Historian T. Lindsay Buick noted in The Treaty of Waitangi that he was the father of Te Hira, which means this may be Te Awa of Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Whakaeke and Ngāti Pongia, who signed He Whakaputanga on 28 October 1835.
