In 1840 more than 500 chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document. Ngā Tohu, when complete, will contain a biographical sketch of each signatory.

Pūhipi Te Ripi signed the Treaty of Waitangi on 28 April 1840 at Kaitāia.

In 1862 Pūhipi Te Ripi was a member of the Mangōnui rūnanga (committee) that was set up as part of a network of new institutions encouraged by the European authorities.

At the time of his death on 6 February 1872, Pūhipi had been an assessor for the Native Land Court for some years.
