Huitao signed Te Tiriti at Tauranga in April or May 1840. His sons, Te Whanake and Tari, also signed. Edward Shortland recorded a conversation he had with Huitao in 1842, in which the rangatira talked about the disillusionment amongst Māori about the protections given in the Treaty.
