Nga Tohu

In 1840 more than 500 chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document. Ngā Tohu, when complete, will contain a biographical sketch of each signatory.

Te Paetui signed the Tauranga sheet of the Treaty of Waitangi in April or May 1840 at Tauranga. He was a rangatira (chief) of Ngāi Te Rangi.

Pae-tui, a Ngāi Te Rangi rangatira, was killed in 1842 at Ō-ngere after Tāraia Ngākuti led a taua (war party) of Ngāti Maru to this pā (fortified village) to seek utu (to restore the balance) for insulting letters sent from Tauranga.
