Te Kauru-o-te-rangi signed the East Coast sheet of the Treaty of Waitangi between 25 and 31 May 1840 at Whakawhitirā, Waiapu. The Ngāti Porou rangatira (chief) was descended from Ruawaipū and lived at Waiapu. Te Kauru-o-te-rangi is said to have died in battle at Te Pakake in 1824; this may have been the signatory’s father.
