Paratene Te Mokopūōrongo signed the East Coast sheet of the Treaty of Waitangi on 9 June 1840 at Tokomaru Bay. Born in the first decade of the 19th century, he was the son of Whakarua and Te Wakaha. His wife Turuhira Ngautuara bore Harata Poiwa.
Paratene was a leader of the Kīngitanga supporters on the East Coast. He died at Tokomaru Bay in 1865.
