I was able to answer my own question, with the help of a former pupil of the school, who showed me a photo his mother took of the Kohukohu school in 1940, which clearly shows the gate at the original school. That has resulted in a registration of the memorial gate (at the current school) for the NZ Historic Places Trust Register
