Petane (now Bay View) was the site of an ambush by colonial forces which killed 12 Pai Mārire supporters on 12 October 1866. Today Bay View serves the local farming and market gardening community and is near to popular beaches and picnic areas along the Esk River

Meaning of place name
Named after the view of Hawke Bay it affords. Formerly known as Petane, the Māori form of the biblical 'Bethany'. The name was changed to avoid confusion with Petone. The original Māori name was Kaiarero.
