Anti-conscientious objection cartoon

This 1918 cartoon from The camp smiler, a Featherston Camp troop magazine,  reflects the perception of many that conscientious objectors were just looking for an excuse of any kind to get out of going to war. The cartoonist here suggests that the ‘gas’ produced by their excuses might be employed to power the camp’s gas electricity engine.
