African scouts

African scouts

Africans attached to the New Zealand Sixth Contingent, circa 1901. All the contingents employed Africans, often young men and boys, to do manual work around camp. Others were highly skilled scouts. Working for the British was dangerous – if captured by the Boers, African scouts faced instant execution.
