Amberley South African War memorial

Amberley South African War memorial (detail) showing the inscription and vandalised relief on the memorial to Farrier Sergeant Turner on the back of the memorial.

Jock Phillips says of this memorial, 'the Latin inscription, "Non Sibi Sed Patriae" ("Not for himself but for his country") [on the front of the memorial], is virtually contradicted by the English phrase, allegedly found in the man's pocket after his death at the battle of Bothasberg, which is inscribed on the other side of the monument: "To Thine Own Self Be True"'.
