Archibald Baxter

Archibald Baxter (1881-1970). Baxter’s memoir We will not cease (1939) provides an unflinching account of his experiences as one of the 14 conscientious objectors deported to the front during the First World War. It describes the violence he was subjected to at the hands of the military authorities and suggests that the men charged with his custody often had little idea what to do with him. Other soldiers were, by turns, fascinated, contemptuous, and supportive of his anti-war stance.
