Altar WWI Lists WWI Lists WWI Lists WWII Lists

Three men from Russell volunteered for overseas service during the South African War: Alfred Williams, Louis Coloquhoun and Athelstane Stephenson. The last-named died of enteric fever not long after the end of the war.  The altar cross at Christ Church Anglican church was given to the church in his memory. The church also displays the Russell First World War and Second World War rolls of honour on either side of the altar. The two wooden tablets list ten and eleven names respectively. There are also individual plaques honouring Clement Wood (d. 1916) and John Peter Rivers (d. 1918). The original HMS Hazard NZ Wars memorial is also housed in the nave.
