Chronicles of the N.Z.E.F. cartoon

Cartoon entitled 'Anxiety' from the Chronicles of the N.Z.E.F., 30 August 1916. Two soldiers in a trench under heavy shellfire watch with alarm the fate of the 'D Coy' rum jar.

Published in fortnightly editions between 30 August 1916 and 24 January 1919, Chronicles of the N.Z.E.F. was a regular source of entertainment and news for New Zealanders serving in France, Belgium and England. By contrast New Zealand at the Front was produced by the NZEF in 1917 and 1918 as a bumper Christmas souvenir for troops to keep or to send home to their families. Many of the men who contributed artwork to these publications used comedy as a way of making the bleak and often horrific conditions of their war service more bearable.
