The memorial to Trooper Ralph Vincent James, who died from disease at Zeerust on 20 November 1900, stood originally at the intersection of Gibbs Rd and William St, next to the courthouse in Collingwood. It was later moved to Elizabeth St, next to two other war memorials.
A newspaper report also describes the hanging of a South African War memorial tablet for Ralph James, of the 5th New Zealand Contingent, in the Forester Institute in Collingwood. This tablet was unveiled in March 1902.
