Daniel Pollen

Dr Daniel Pollen (1813-1896) was a medical doctor, scientist, journalist and
politician. Born in Dublin, Ireland, he may have spent some years in the United States before going to NSW in 1830s and then across to Auckland in Dec 1839/Jan 1840.

Pollen was a witness at the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. He married Jane Henderson Essex, daughter of Lieutenant Essex RN, on 18 May 1846 at Nelson. Elected to the Auckland Provincial Council, Pollen later became a member of the Legislative Council and briefly, Colonial Secretary. He established a brickworks factory at Avondale in the 1870s, having earlier received a medal at the New Zealand Exhibition (Dunedin, 1865) for his zealous efforts to foster the manufacture of pottery.
