Erebus disaster memorial at Waikumete Cemetery

This memorial at Waikumete Cemetery in Auckland was erected above the graves of those not identified following the Erebus disaster. It was dedicated in November 1980 on the first anniversary of the tragedy. Inscribed upon it are the names of the 44 victims whose remains were not identified or recovered from Antarctica.

The brass plaque near the memorial was unveiled at the same time. It commemorates all those who died in the disaster. The tree was planted at the same time, possibly by relatives of the Japanese victims.
