Up until the tragic sinking of the second Wahine in 1968, the Lyttelton–Wellington ferry service was generally safe and reliable. This photograph shows the aftermath of one of several incidents in the late 1930s and early 1940s when the first Wahine struck Wellington's Pipitea Wharf
in thick fog in June 1936.
