Government House, about 1900

Government House, about 1900. Designed by William Clayton in 1871, this building originally served as the governor's official residence. After fire destroyed the main parliamentary buildings in 1907 the building was used as the Legislative Chambers, and the governor was moved, temporarily, to Palmerston North before returning to new quarters in Wellington.

After the new Legislative Chambers were completed in 1922 this building continued to be used as Bellamy's Block. The tower was removed in 1944 as it was an earthquake risk. The rest of the structure was finally demolished in 1969 to make way for the Beehive.
