The Hakaru First World War and Second World War rolls of honour are housed in the isolated rural church of St Michael and All Angels. The First World War roll of honour lists the names of 41 servicemen, 13 of whom died during the war. The Second World War roll of honour lists ten names. The only Second World War casualty, Frank Wintle, is also commemorated on a wrought iron gate at the churchyard’s entrance.

The church is the second church on the site and was opened in 1887. The graveyard includes a gravestone of Trooper Henry Ormonde Ryan, who served in the South African War but who died at Somes Island on 13 August 1902 after returning to New Zealand.
