HMS Achilles badge

HMS Achilles badge

HMS Achilles' ship's badge. This was designed in England by Major C.J. ffoulkes (1868-1947) and approved on 20 July 1931. The badge bears the helmeted head of Achilles on a red background and the motto Fortiter in Re, meaning either 'unyielding in action' or 'bravely in action'.

Crew on the Gambia had jewellers make versions of this ship's badge for wear as lapel badges and signet rings. I have both in my grandfather's effects. He served on Gambia during WW2.
