James Allen

James Allen

As minister of defence during the First World War, James Allen (1855-1942) was responsible for keeping up New Zealand’s war effort, a role that brought him both recognition and criticism.

Though he regarded some conscientious objectors with sympathy, he never wavered in his belief that it was the citizen’s duty to serve their country in wartime and that other considerations should take second place.
