Portrait of James Crowe Richmond, engineer, artist, politician and journalist. Taken by an unknown photographer between 1880 and 1898. During the Taranaki War Richmond served as a Provincial Councillor (his brother was the Native Minister).
Reacting to the disruption of the Waitara survey, Richmond stated that the aim had not been ‘to convict a parcel of women and old men of a misdemeanor but to provoke the chiefs to fight … up to the actual point of defiance of the Government, i.e. High Treason.’
Historian Ranginui Walker has described Richmond as a ‘European supremacist who had no qualms about instigating an unjust war against people whom he referred to in private as "niggers"’.
