The bridge was designed and its construction supervised by the distinguished civil engineer, Alfred Falkner, whose accomplishments include the Hurunui bridge and the first drafting of the Wellington to Manawatu Railway. The stone used in its construction came from the Makakahi River.

The bridge has been somewhat restored, and rededicated on April 6 2006. It is well-signposted (as 'ANZAC bridge'), with information signs at the nearby reserve. There are 6 WWI and 3 WWII names on the plaque. I have photos from 27/5/08.
