Martini-Enfield 'Artillery' carbine

Martini-Enfield 'Artillery' .303 calibre carbine, made by the Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield, England, 1897. Carved into the butt of this weapon are the names of places where New Zealanders fought against Boers during the South African War, 1899-1902.

New Zealand forces in South Africa were initially equipped with Martini-Enfield carbines. Following the capture of Bloemfontein in March 1900 these single-shot weapons were replaced with .303 Lee Enfield cavalry carbines which possessed a five shot magazine.
