Members of 1 NZ Regiment on patrol in Malaya

Members of the 1st Battalion, New Zealand Regiment prepare to leave camp for a six-day patrol in July 1958, during the Malayan Emergency. From March 1958 the battalion, which had replaced the SAS squadron, mounted a series of deep jungle patrols designed to clear Perak state of insurgents.

The group of soldiers on the right are (from right): Ernie Johnsen (leading scout), Pat Power (commander), Peter Hughey (bren gunner), ----- Cameron (medic), Mr Chan (interpreter), Tom McFarlane (rifleman), Harry Marquet.

Hello. I recently purchased a plaque gifted to the Sergeants Mess 1st New Zealand Regiment by the Sergeants Mess Queens Royal Irish Hussars Malaya 1963. I bought it for my father who was in Malaya in 1963 with the QRIH Regiment. I was wondering if anyone knows why the plaque was gifted between the 2 Regiments, what was the event that led up to the gift? I just thought it would be interesting for him to know. Thank you.
