Ottoman signatories of Treaty of Sèvres

Ottoman signatories of Treaty of Sèvres

The Ottoman Empire's representatives at the signing of the Treaty of Sèvres, 10 August 1920.

From left to right are: Riza Tevfik (Poet), Damat Ferit Pasha (Grand Vizier), Bağdatlı Hadi Pasha (Minister of Education), and Reşad Halis (Ambassador to Switzerland).

As a result of their involvement in the signing of the Treaty of Sèvres all four were stripped of their citizenship by the Grand National Assembly established under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal. Following the Turkish War of Independence, 1919 – 1923 they were included in a list of 150 persons deemed personae non grata (an unwelcome person) and expelled by the newly established Turkish Republic. This list – known as Yüzellilikler in Turkish – was designed to eliminate the last remnants of the ruling Ottoman elite from the new Republic.
