HMS Achilles during the Battle of the River Plate

Painting of HMS Achilles (foreground) in action during the Battle of the River Plate, 13 December 1939. The New Zealand flag - flying in a naval engagement for the first time ever - can be seen on the mainmast (the British white ensign is on the foremast). The Admiral Graf Spee is in the background in the distance to the left, and HMS Ajax in the distance to the right. The painting is by Arthur John Lloyd.
