Painting of the SS Maori

Painting of the SS Maori

Arthur Hayden's watercolour captures the Union Steam Ship Company's Lyttelton–Wellington ferry Maori alongside the Wellington inter-island berth. The Maori was a mainstay of the inter-island service from 1907 to until 1931, when the Rangatira arrived. After this the Maori was used as a relief ship, but it was forced back into regular inter-island service during the Second World War. Laid up again in 1944, the vessel was eventually scrapped in 1951.
