This is a prototype house using treated building poles as a frame. They were chosen as structural supports as they could be located without harming the roots of the magnificaent kauri trees surrounding the house. It was built in 1973 after the owner Peter Norton Dip. Arch. returned from 5 years in Europe. His experience in this type of structure enabled him to open his own practice ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN LTD in 1974. The success of this new construction method was not only recognised in European architectural publications but also provided New Zealand property owners with a viable, economic system for building on difficult sites.
