Uniformed police kept the Greymouth wharf clear of strikers and the general public (click on thumbnail to see full image).
The coal-mining areas of the Grey Valley and the Buller district were the heartland of UFL support. Watersiders at Westport struck on 29 October, and those at Greymouth on 3 November. Coal mines around the Coast also went on strike. The authorities only regained control of the situation in December, after the strike was broken in Wellington and Christchurch and a substantial number of regular police could be sent to the West Coast.
