Portrait of Te Kooti

Portrait of Te Kooti

Portrait of Ngati Maru warrior and religious leader Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki.

Believed to have been painted from memory and imagination by Thomas Ryan in 1889 or 1891. The artist hoped to meet Te Kooti on a journey into the Urewera country in 1891, but did not succeed in meeting him. He had met Te Kooti in person in 1883 in Rotorua, however.
