Railway buffet car

Railway buffet car

After an absence of half a century, in the late 1960s and early 1970s New Zealand Railways introduced on-board refreshments on its prestige passenger trains. This image shows passengers drinking tea and coffee in the buffet car on the new Southerner during its trial run in November 1970. A large tin of instant coffee is behind the woman on the left. The Silver Star on the North Island main trunk featured a more elegant sit-down dining car.
