Railways food hamper

As an alternative to the refreshment room crush, in 1928 New Zealand Railways introduced these luncheon hampers on main trunk expresses. Available for three shillings at Frankton Junction and Marton, they contained a thermos flask of tea, cold ham, tongue, mutton or corned beef, salad, bread and butter, biscuits and cheese, an apple, orange or banana, condiments, crockery, cutlery and a serviette. But sales were 'rather disappointing' and the service was withdrawn in 1931.
