Raising the New Zealand flag in Apia, 1930s

A ceremony for the raising of the New Zealand flag at the Courthouse, Apia, Western Samoa. This photograph taken between 1935 and 1940.

Alfred Turnbull was acting New Zealand Administrator at this time. Although the recently elected New Zealand Labour government repealed the Samoan Offenders Ordinance and recognised the Mau as a legitimate political organisation in 1936, it wasn't until 1962 that Samoa finally achieved independence.
