The Raurimu Spiral is one of the most famous engineering features of New Zealand's rail system. Designed by engineer Robert Holmes, it includes two tunnels, three horseshoe curves and a complete circle. Here, the spiral is celebrated in a 1929 New Zealand Railways publicity fold-out designed by E.M. Lovell-Smith.
