Sawyers Bay war memorial

Memorial detail Memorial detail

Sawyers Bay war memorial.

The memorial is under (and under attack by) a grove of very large and aggressive gum trees beside highway 88 (Dunedin to Port Chalmers). The base is cracked and displaced and the memorial has a lean.

It is a five piece granite memorial on a concrete base with steps recording the names of 15 men who were killed in the First World War.

Update: In 2016 the memorial was relocated from State Highway 88 to the Sawyers Bay school grounds (click on second thumbnail to see new location). At the same time the lead lettering was changed to painted white letters as the grey lead on grey granite had become illegible. This work was commissioned by the Dunedin City Council.
