Sir Paul Reeves

I was part of a 4-man team which accompanied Sir Paul Reeves, Governor-General of New Zealand, to the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station, the American scientific research station on the high plateau of Antarctica, the southernmost place on Earth. He was the first Governor-General of New Zealand to stand at the South Pole. The team included U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand, Paul Cleveland, U.S. Ambassador to Australia, Bill Lane, Jim Beasley, Col. Jim Waggener, United States Air Attaché to the U. S. Embassy, Brisbane, Australia and Col. Tom Wood, United States Air Attaché to the U. S. Embassy, Wellington, New Zealand. We flew into the station on a ski-equipped LC-130 Hercules aircraft from McMurdo which were used to supply the station. Resupply missions were collectively termed Operation Deep Freeze.
