US Marine Corps memorial, Wellington

Memorial plaque Memorial plaque Memorial plaque Memorial plaque Memorial plaque

Memorial plaque commemorating the arrival of the United States Marine Corps to New Zealand. Although the plaque states this happened in May 1942, the first Marines actually arrived in Auckland on 12 June and Wellington on 14 June (though it is possible an advance party got here in May). The plaque is located on a wall bordering Frank Kitts Park on the Wellington waterfront.

The plaque was rededicated in 2000, having been moved from its original location on the waterfront near the Westpac stadium (which is where the first Marines actually landed). The plaque was made in 1951.
